With a copyright of 2006, The Smart Girl’s Guide to Porn by Violet Blue isn’t the newest… but I still think this book is a solid handbook for having an important conversation about porn viewing, tailored to women readers. I think this book could be used solo for women exploring porn on their own, or read with a partner to facilitate communication regarding the role erotic media can play in the relationship as well as individually. (Indeed, there is a chapter at the beginning for viewing porn on your own and a chapter at the end about exploring porn for couples.)

This is very much a beginner’s guide but provides relevant and practical information that isn’t belittling. The book explores many important ideas including how women navigate porn, what they want from it, the role it plays in our lives, how individuals can figure out what the best porn is for them, and untangling concerns about content including what is true and what is a myth when it comes to porn

The book starts with a narration that is more conversational and philosophical and then delves into more informative chapters that include vocabulary and defining different genres of porn and what they include. Mainstream porn, indie-porn, porn blogs, and more are covered.

Because the author wrote reviews about porn as well as viewing porn for pleasure, she is in-tune with common complaints both men and women have levied at porn and offers insightful guidance to find porn that you’ll actually enjoy viewing. This is all presented in a down to earth narration that doesn’t hold back where it counts, but maintains a polished presentation throughout.

If your only experience with porn is the DVD wall at the novelty store or some tentative late night pornhub encounters, this book will be like stepping out of the “black and white” part of The Wizard of Oz into a vivid world of porn possibilities. If you’ve watched some porn but haven’t quite figured out how it could work for you, this book could offer you the direction you need to bring you to your destination.

Overall this book has important information that stands the test of time even if some of the technological details are now outdated. I recommend this book because it offers a foundation of information and perspective to help the reader discover the unique role porn viewing will provide for their pleasure and exploration. An even weight is given to education and fun. With a 5.5×8 trim size and guidebook layout, this book is also a wealth of information without being overwhelming. It’s a great little book I am grateful to have read and readily recommend to others.
